Botanical Walk at Howard Swain Memorial Forest

Join us for a summer exploration of the remarkable landscapes and plant communities of the Howard Swain Memorial Forest in Deerfield. Nestled beside Pawtuckaway State Park, this 89-acre preserve protects a fascinating mix of forest, wetland, and geological features shaped by an ancient volcanic landscape. The property includes portions of Rocky Ridge and the shoreline of Dead Pond, a rare bog-like fen that supports distinctive plant communities and wildlife.
As we walk the trails, we’ll observe shrubs, ferns, and wildflowers while discussing the ecological relationships that shape this unique landscape. Along the way, we’ll explore how geology and hydrology influence the diversity of plants found here.
