A Clean Bill of Health for the Burley Barn

Several weeks ago, our good friends at Absolute Resource Associates (ARA) performed a hazardous materials survey at the barn at Burley Farms – and they donated their time and services!

Using an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), which absolutely sounds like something the Ghostbusters would use, Jason from ARA was able to scan the entire building to look for lead paint.

(XRF trivia: the machine can see straight through surfaces, offering real-time on-site readings that can detect if lead paint lies underneath – which is an absolute picnic compared to the days of tedious paint scraping and testing.)

The verdict: no lead paint discovered.

The asbestos examination – which included the collection and testing of physical samples like cement, plaster, and roofing – resulted in a clean bill of health as well.

This is, obviously, great news. Beyond the environmental concerns related to the presence of these hazardous materials, the removal of these infrastructural malefactors would have required significant financial cost.

“This was our third time on the property,” Jason says. “Since we’re an environmental company, we have a strong connection to environmental projects. SELT’s values line up with our values. And a lot of our employees love the outdoors and enjoy SELT’s lands.”

ARA is located in Portsmouth, NH and has been around for 21 years. Their offerings include indoor air quality and hazardous material surveys, as well laboratory services like soil and drinking water analysis. Learn more about ARA here.

We are incredibly grateful to ARA for their donation in support of SELT’s mission.
