Intro to Trail Design & Construction
October 23, 2021 @ 8:30 am - 4:00 pm
Join SELT for a one-day workshop focusing on the basics of trail design and construction led by Lew Shelley of SnowHawk LLC. Participants will have the opportunity for hands-on learning while starting work on a new trail at Birch Hill in the Birch Ridge Community Forest. Some of the topics covered will include:
- Sustainable trail design and layout
- Trail tools and their uses
- Trail construction techniques (with an emphasis on hiking trails)
- Risk management at the work site
- Trail maintenance
Tools will be provided and sanitized. Participants must bring their own lunch, work gloves, water bottles, backpack, and wear sturdy hiking boots (no open-toed sandals). Participants will be asked to sign a Medical Waiver on the day of the event. This workshop will be held rain or shine, however we will cancel if there is heavy rain or thunderstorms in the forecast. A certificate of completion of the Trail and Design Workshop will be sent out after completion.
Expect arduous and uncomfortable working conditions. Participants must be 18 years of age or older.
