We will explore a lesser-known area of BRCF with high value wildlife habitat (including the largest wetland complex on the Property!). We will discuss management for wildlife in young forests and forest recovery after heavy timber harvesting. Phil Primack was a reporter for newspapers from Boston to Appalachia and has written for\, among others\, the New York Times\, Boston Globe\, Columbia Journalism Review\, and The Nation. He has taught journalism and is the author of New England Country Fair. \n“Mary E. Folsom Blair was just a name on a listing sheet when young writer Phil Primack bought her Epping\, New Hampshire\, property in 1974. As he learned more about this lifelong teacher\, Quaker\, and early advocate for outdoor education\, his reporter bones began to twitch. SUMMARY:Hawk Watch with Scott Weidensaul
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Birch Ridge Community Forest for a hawk watch with renowned ornithologist and best-selling nature writer Scott Weidensaul. Scott will share his deep expertise with participants as well as his experiences from over 20 years of working with birds in the field across the globe. This unique experience is not to be missed! Space is limited\, and advance registration is required. This event is free\, with a suggested donation of $15 to support our programs.  \n   \nWe will hike up to higher ground to watch for migrating hawk and raptor species as they head to warmer climates in preparation for winter. Late September is an ideal time to see migrating birds\, which may pass by in the hundreds or even thousands.
