SUMMARY:Native Plants 101 Presented by Roanne Robbins of Van Berkum Nursery
DESCRIPTION:Native plants are the quiet architects of our local ecosystems\, weaving resilience\, beauty\, and life into every corner of the landscape. This talk led by Roanne Robbins\, Van Berkum Nursery’s Director of Outreach and Education\, invites you to explore their rhythms and relationships—how they sustain wildlife\, enrich soil\, and shape the natural world around us. Rooted in years of careful observation and cultivation\, the discussion will guide you through the essentials of identifying\, planting\, and nurturing native species. Whether you tend a small garden or steward a stretch of land\, this session encourages a deeper connection to place and offers practical wisdom to foster biodiversity and lasting ecological health. \nAlso\, you will have an opportunity to participate in SELT’s first annual native plant sale and ask Roanne questions about the plants that are a part of the sale. \n\nRegistration Required: CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:Winter Animal Tracking Hike At Burley Farms
DESCRIPTION:The winter season is an ideal time for being outdoors and exploring the local woods. Many mammals and birds are active during this time\, including bobcat\, coyote\, deer\, fox\, rabbit\, squirrel\, chickadee\, jay\, turkey\, and woodpecker. \nJoin us for an in-the-field winter animal tracking walk-and-talk hike at Burley Farms. The hike will be led by Nottingham resident Tom Eid. During the hike\, you will learn common tracking terms as well as animal movement patterns. For example\, mammals have four primary ways of moving: walking\, waddling\, hopping\, and bounding. \nA hand-out will be provided that explains mammal movement patterns\, a listing of mammals active in winter\, and foot print pictures of nine mammals active during the winter months at Burley Farms. \nNo animal tracking experience is needed for the hike. Steady rain/snow\, icy trail conditions\, or lack of snow will cancel the event. \nNo pets\, please. \nTom Eid is a certified naturalist with the Audubon Society\, a Coverts Cooperator with the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension\, a Land Steward for the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests\, and a Wildlife Steward for the New Hampshire Department of Fish and Game. \nHe is an active volunteer for the New England Big Trees program\, Nature Groupie\, Bear-Paw Regional Greenways\, and the Southeast Land Trust. \n\nRegistration Required: CLICK HERE\nDifficulty: Easy

SUMMARY:SELTie Book Club - Winter 2026
DESCRIPTION:The SELTie Book Club continues! The book selection this time around will be Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy and the discussion on March 4 will be led by Kelly Arp who recommended the book during our last discussion. Refreshments will be provided. \nA family on a remote island. A mysterious woman washed ashore. A rising storm on the horizon. \nDominic Salt and his three children are caretakers of Shearwater\, a tiny island not far from Antarctica. Home to the world’s largest seed bank\, Shearwater was once full of researchers\, but with sea levels rising\, the Salts are now its final inhabitants. Until\, during the worst storm the island has ever seen\, a woman mysteriously washes ashore. \nIsolation has taken its toll on the Salts\, but as they nurse the woman\, Rowan\, back to strength\, it begins to feel like she might just be what they need. Rowan\, long accustomed to protecting herself\, starts imagining a future where she could belong to someone again. \nBut Rowan isn’t telling the whole truth about why she set out for Shearwater. And when she discovers sabotaged radios and a freshly dug grave\, she realizes Dominic is keeping his own secrets. As the storms on Shearwater gather force\, they all must decide if they can trust each other enough to protect the precious seeds in their care before it’s too late—and if they can finally put the tragedies of the past behind them to create something new\, together. \nA novel of breathtaking twists\, dizzying beauty\, and ferocious love\, Wild Dark Shore is about the impossible choices we make to protect the people we love\, even as the world around us disappears. \n\nRegistration Required: CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:Gardens in Relationship: Designing with Native Plants
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Landscape Designer Ashley Robinson and Van Berkum Nursery’s Director of Outreach & Education Roanne Robbins explore the art and science of designing native plant gardens that support biodiversity while reflecting both your personal goals and the realities of your space. Participants will learn how plants interact over time and how those relationships shape dynamic\, living landscapes. The session focuses on creating resilient\, sustainable\, and visually engaging gardens that provide ecological value year-round. Attendees are encouraged to bring photos\, sketches\, and site-specific information to collaborate and brainstorm their designs with Ashley and Roanne. \nAshley Robinson has nearly 20 years of experience designing and consulting on ecologically grounded landscape practices\, with a strong emphasis on native plants\, biodiversity\, and regenerative land stewardship. Her work centers on integrating homes into their landscapes in ways that support local ecosystems and strengthen connections to place. \nShe holds a degree in Urban Studies from the University of San Diego and has studied at Radcliffe and the Landscape Institute in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. Ashley values collaboration\, field-based learning\, and ongoing education\, continually deepening her understanding of dynamic ecological systems. \nGuided by a deep respect for natural processes and regional landscapes\, Ashley’s designs prioritize habitat creation\, ecological resilience\, and long-term environmental health. She currently resides in Vermont and serves on the board of the Vermont Nursery & Landscape Association. She is also a member of the Biodiversity Alliance and the Ecological Landscape Alliance. \nhttps://www.arobinsonlandscapes.com/ \nAlso\, you will have an opportunity to participate in SELT’s first annual native plant sale before it ends on March 15 and ask Roanne questions about the plants that are a part of the sale. \n\nRegistration required: CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:Reading Rural Landscapes with Dr. Rob Sanford
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an active engagement PowerPoint presentation on viewing and interpreting common local rural environmental features that provide clues to our historical past. Ordinary landscapes can reveal what happened in the past. So\, we will not be dealing with the exotic\, just what you might expect to see around your own homes. You can follow up these clues with historical research\, oral interviews and field work. But sometimes it is fun to just look around and see what we see on a walk. Time and weather permitting\, we will go outside after and see what our setting at Burley Farms happens to say. \nRob Sanford is a Registered Professional Archaeologist and a Professor Emeritus of Environmental Science & Policy at the University of Southern Maine. His books include Reading Rural Landscapes\, River Voices: Perspectives on the Presumpscot\, and Cultural Resources Archaeology. \nRegistration Required: CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:What’s Wild in New Hampshire with Eric Orff
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, May 6th at the Mathey Center in Epping for an inspiring presentation by Eric Orff that will teach us about the “wild” right here in New Hampshire\, and how to better appreciate and protect it. \nAs the state’s first bear biologist in the 1970s\, Eric Orff began a half-century career as a “forest ranger who works with animals\,” his stated dream job as a 7-year-old. With more than thirty-one years at the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department and another fifteen years with the National Wildlife Federation\, Eric still publishes a video blog called “What’s Wild in New Hampshire” that regularly receives hundreds of thousands of views each week. \nEric’s career has spanned much more than bears; he has been called to work with White-tailed Deer\, bats in a laundry room\, snakes in a bathroom\, and more. Journey with Eric through his childhood fishing expeditions\, “eeling” mishaps\, and dancing with fire in the field. Don’t miss a chance to learn about Eric’s entertaining and inspiring stories as a wildlife biologist.
