SUMMARY:Sarah Koff Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an informative and enlightening evening with Exeter-based woodcut printmaker Sarah Koff as she discusses the concept of invisibility as related to environmental activism/education\, through the lens of art. \nPeople care more about what they see in front of them. Unfortunately\, most of the problems plaguing the environment (and\, in turn\, our health) today are invisible to the naked eye\, from microscopic nematodes to air particulates. How can we as environmentalists make the invisible visible?  As a printmaker\, Sarah plays with layers of graphics and ink transparency to bring visibility to such destructive elements as pfas\, microplastics\, pesticides\, nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus\, and more. \nSarah is a printmaker\, gardener\, and environmentalist. She creates her woodcuts in the woods of New Hampshire to tell nature’s stories.  Stories from her own backyard\, like the slow creep of the hemlock woolly adelgid\, to such global hotspots as the coral reefs.  But mostly she sticks to her own backyard\, because that is where she first discovered her deep passion for the natural world — that passion that has driven her career and now motivates her to make.  A former environmental educator with a masters’ degree in ecological design\, she has always been intrigued by the connection between humans and the natural world.  As her art practice has grown\, so too has her aspiration to inspire people to become as invested in protecting the natural world as she has.  And from her woodcut studio\, she strives to do just that\, from telling stories with each print\, to pledging a percentage of sales to hard-working conservation organizations\, including SELT. \n\nRegistration Required: CLICK HERE\n\nMore about Sarah and her work can be found at https://sarahkoffstudio.com/

SUMMARY:Webinar: Connect to Protect – Land Protection Status and Trends in New Hampshire’s Coastal Watershed
DESCRIPTION:In 2021\, conservation partners set an ambitious goal of protecting 4\,000 acres a year in the 52 towns that make up NH’s coastal watershed. To help meet this goal\, we updated a regional conservation plan\, rallied funders\, technical assistance providers and municipalities\, and launched an outreach program called Connect to Protect. So how are we doing? Pete Steckler from the Northeast Conservation Services has been updating data and maps about current conservation lands and will share a status report. Through this update\, 271 tracks of conservation/public lands were added across NH’s Coastal Watershed. How does this measure up to our goals? \n ZOOM REGISTRATION LINK \nJoin this webinar to: \n\nLearn or remind yourself about Connect to Protect\nSee the latest updates on status and trends of land protection for coastal NH\nLearn about available resources to support land protection and stewardship \nConnect with assistance providers and funders who support communities in this work\n\n \nThis webinar is hosted by the Connect to Protect team\, including staff from NH Fish and Game/Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve\, Northeast Conservation Services\, Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership\, UNH Extension\, and NH Sea Grant.

SUMMARY:Lichen It or Not: The Wonders of Symbiosis! with Nature Columnist Susan Pike
DESCRIPTION:Join Nature Columnist\, National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions Naturalist\, Dover High School Science Teacher\, and Great Works Regional Land Trust (GWRLT) Board Member Sue Pike for a talk about the biology and basics of identifying common lichens. Lichens are a complex and beautiful life form that grow almost everywhere but are often overlooked and misunderstood. Not a plant and not a fungus\, they are composed of\, at the minimum\, two completely separate organisms-a fungus and an algae. They grow in your backyard\, in the woods\, in the fields. You’ll also find them in some of Earth’s most extreme places: mountaintops\, sea-splashed cliffs\, and gravestones. If you do any hiking in the White Mountains\, you’ll find lichens well above treeline growing on the stunted trees that are continually blasted by winter winds\, frozen into eerie shapes\, coated with rime ice\, subjected to temperatures well below zero degrees. You’ll also find them along the coast\, clinging to salt spray-soaked pine trees\, bearding cedars and other evergreens in bogs and swamps. They have even survived space! How do they do this? What exactly are they? Are they easy to identify? Come find out. \n\nRegistration Required: CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:Helping New Hampshire's Turtles
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about the fascinating and inspiring work of NH Turtle Rescue\, the small nonprofit organization based just down Route 125 from SELT in Nottingham and operated by Dallas Huggins and Drew Stevens\, licensed wildlife rehabilitators in the state of New Hampshire. They work closely with their mentor\, Chris Bogard\, who has been rehabilitating turtles for over 20 years. \nNH Turtle Rescue’s mission is to rescue\, rehabilitate\, release\, and preserve native turtle species through individualized care\, public education\, outreach\, and scientific research in support of imperiled populations of wild New Hampshire turtles. \nIn our early planning\, Drew mentioned the following: “I think our missions dovetail together in a very compelling way: we are the reactive side of turtle conservation in that we deal primarily with the consequences of habitat loss and fragmentation\, and SELT is the proactive side of turtle conservation by providing a means to protect important habitat and its wildlife before those wild animals become imperiled. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure\, but in this case\, there is no true cure\, so protecting habitat is truly the only way to guarantee some type of future for our native turtle species in the long-term.” \nThey will have some turtle ambassadors with them to meet during the talk as well. 🐢🐢🐢 \n\nThis event is open to all ages.\nRegistration required: CLICK HERE\n\nMore about New Hampshire Turtle Rescue can be found at nhturtlerescue.org

SUMMARY:Bird Photography Field Trip with Tony Baldasaro
DESCRIPTION:Join regionally renowned wildlife photographer Tony Baldasaro for a bird photography field trip. Tony will take you out to the northern side of the Burley Farms property to get up close with the fields\, forest\, and beaver pond and our avian friends who call these places home. Participants will learn more about finding the best scenarios for bird photography- including lighting\, bird position\, and bird action shots. This field trip is for photographers with at least some wildlife photography experience and the suggested equipment includes: \n\nDSLR or Mirrorless Camera\nLens long enough for wildlife photography (more than 200 mm). Ideally this will be a zoom lens and not a fixed lens.  (see below)\nBecause we will be primarily photographing small\, fast-moving birds\, a zoom lens with a wide range of focal lengths is ideal. (100-400\, 100-500\, 150 – 600 are examples).  Having a big\, heavy prime lens\, like a fixed 600mm\, will only slow our participants down.\nA tripod is not recommended as it can slow down your photography. Photographers should prepare to be handheld or use a nimble monopod.\n\nWe hope you can join this educational and fun morning of bird photography at Burley! To learn more about Tony and his photography\, visit his website at tb3photography.com or find him on Instagram @tb3_photo. \n\nRegistration Required: CLICK HERE
