SUMMARY:SELT Book Club with Guest Host Mary Magnusson: Diary of a Teenage Naturalist by Dara McAnulty
DESCRIPTION:A lifelong NH resident\, Mary Magnusson lives in Kingston where she gardens\, reads\, and hangs out with family and friends. She teaches English at Bedford High School\, and is currently teaching an elective focused on nature/environmental writing. \n“From sixteen-year-old Dara McAnulty\, a globally renowned figure in the youth climate activist movement\, comes a memoir about loving the natural world and fighting to save it. Diary of a Young Naturalist chronicles the turning of a year in Dara’s Northern Ireland home patch. Beginning in spring–when “the sparrows dig the moss from the guttering and the air is as puffed out as the robin’s chest”–these diary entries about his connection to wildlife and the way he sees the world are vivid\, evocative\, and moving. As well as Dara’s intense connection to the natural world\, Diary of a Young Naturalist captures his perspective as a teenager juggling exams\, friendships\, and a life of campaigning. We see his close-knit family\, the disruptions of moving and changing schools\, and the complexities of living with autism.” \nThis event will be held at the SELT downtown Exeter office. \nWe are still partnering with our friends at Water Street Bookstore in Exeter\, who will donate 20% of the proceeds from Diary of a Teenage Naturalist to SELT – You can order through their website (www.waterstreetbooks.com) or pick up in store. \n  \nRegistration required –www.tinyurl.com/seltoutreach

SUMMARY:SELT Book Club - Why Fish Don't Exist by Lulu Miller
DESCRIPTION:Join SELT Deputy Director\, Beverly Shadley\, for snacks\, drinks\, and a lively discussion on Why Fish Don’t Exist by Lulu Miller. \nDavid Starr Jordan was a taxonomist\, a man possessed with bringing order to the natural world. In time\, he would be credited with discovering nearly a fifth of the fish known to humans in his day. But the more of the hidden blueprint of life he uncovered\, the harder the universe seemed to try to thwart him. His specimen collections were demolished by lightning\, by fire\, and eventually by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake—which sent more than a thousand discoveries\, housed in fragile glass jars\, plummeting to the floor. In an instant\, his life’s work was shattered. \nMany might have given up\, given in to despair. But Jordan? He surveyed the wreckage at his feet\, found the first fish that he recognized\, and confidently began to rebuild his collection. And this time\, he introduced one clever innovation that he believed would at last protect his work against the chaos of the world. \nWhen NPR reporter Lulu Miller first heard this anecdote in passing\, she took Jordan for a fool—a cautionary tale in hubris\, or denial. But as her own life slowly unraveled\, she began to wonder about him. Perhaps instead he was a model for how to go on when all seemed lost. What she would unearth about his life would transform her understanding of history\, morality\, and the world beneath her feet. \nPart biography\, part memoir\, part scientific adventure\, Why Fish Don’t Exist is a wondrous fable about how to persevere in a world where chaos will always prevail. \n  \nWe are still partnering with our friends at Water Street Bookstore in Exeter\, who will donate 20% of the proceeds from Why Fish Don’t Exist to SELT – to order: \nGrab your copy in person in downtown Exeter\, or order through their website (www.waterstreetbooks.com) and get free shipping! \n  \nRegistration required\, Click Here to Register

SUMMARY:SELT Book Club – Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers
DESCRIPTION:Now in-person! Join Deputy Director\, Beverly Shadley\, as she guest hosts the Summer 2021\, SELT Book Club! Let’s talk about Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers alongside the Squamscott Rive in Exeter’s beautiful Swasey Parkway. Local goodies will be provided from the Exeter Farmer’s Market\, which will be wrapping up as the book club launches. Arrive early to enjoy the Market and support local farms!! \nAbout Record of a Spaceborn Few – With a positive spin on the future of humanity\, Chambers explores an off-planet future for Earthlings. Description: “Hundreds of years ago\, the last humans on Earth boarded the Exodus Fleet in search of a new home among the stars. After centuries spent wandering empty space\, their descendants were eventually accepted by the well-established species that govern the Milky Way. \nToday\, the Exodus Fleet is a living relic\, the birthplace of many\, yet a place few outsiders have ever visited. While the Exodans take great pride in their original community and traditions\, their culture has been influenced by others beyond their bulkheads. As many Exodans leave for alien cities or terrestrial colonies\, those who remain are left to ponder their own lives and futures: What is the purpose of a ship that has reached its destination? Why remain in space when there are habitable worlds available to live? What is the price of sustaining their carefully balanced way of life–and is it worth saving at all?” \nThis is a rain or shine event. In case of rain\, SELT’s Book Club will be held at SELT’s nearby downtown Exeter Office. \nWe are still partnering with our friends at Water Street Bookstore in Exeter\, who will donate 20% of the proceeds from Record of a Spaceborn Few to SELT – to order: \n\nGive them call at (603) 778-9731\, they can take your credit card over the phone and organize stoop pickup. They are also offering limited home delivery in the immediate Exeter area.\nYou can order through their website (www.waterstreetbooks.com) and get free shipping!\n\nRegistration required\, Click Here to Register

SUMMARY:Hosted by White Pine Programs – Guided Naturalist Walk
DESCRIPTION:*RESCHEDULED TO JUNE 26TH* Join White Pine Programs Educator & Naturalist Ryan Busby to explore Burley Farms as he shares techniques for awakening your senses to the living landscape.  Wildlife tracking\, bird language\, pattern recognition and natural movement are just some of the topics that could come up on the walk.  When we begin to see the subtle patterns and behaviors on our landscapes as clues\, we can unlock the mysteries of nature and engage fully as resourceful and resilient people and communities. We can regain them and deepen our connection to the world around us.  This event is for adults and children 10+ years of age. \n\nDifficulty: Easy\nThis event is in partnership with our friends at White Pine Programs\nGroup size is limited due to COVID-19\nCOVID-19 Safety Policy\nRegistration is required\nEmail Ryan Busby with your questions at: ryan@whitepineprograms.org
