SUMMARY:Hosted by White Pine Programs – Guided Naturalist Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join White Pine Programs Educator & Naturalist Ryan Busby for an exploration of Charles E. Rand memorial Forest as he shares techniques for awakening your senses to the living landscape.  Wildlife tracking\, bird language\, pattern recognition and natural movement are just some of the topics that could come up on the walk.  When we begin to see the subtle patterns and behaviors on our landscapes as clues\, we can unlock the mysteries of nature and engage fully as resourceful and resilient people and communities. Our ancestors learned these skills at an early age. We can regain them and deepen our connection to the world around us.  This event is for adults and children 10+ years of age. \n  \n\nDifficulty: Easy\nThis event is in partnership with our friends at White Pine Programs\nGroup size is limited due to COVID-19\nYou can read our COVID-19 Safety Policy here: www.seltnh.org/covid19/\nRegistration is required: https://www.meetup.com/Seacoast-Nature-Connection/events/276403693/\nEmail Ryan Busby with your questions at: ryan@whitepineprograms.org

SUMMARY:Book Club with Phil Primack and Water Street Bookstore: ‘Put It Down On Paper’: The Words and Life of Mary Folsom Blair\, A Fifty-Year Search by Phil Primack
DESCRIPTION:Join SELT\, local Epping author Phil Primack\, and Water Street Bookstore for a book club meeting for ‘Put It Down On Paper’: The Words and Life of Mary Folsom Blair\, A Fifty-Year Search by Phil Primack at the new Nan & George Mathey Center for People and Nature at Burley Farms! Phil Primack was a reporter for newspapers from Boston to Appalachia and has written for\, among others\, the New York Times\, Boston Globe\, Columbia Journalism Review\, and The Nation. He has taught journalism and is the author of New England Country Fair. \n“Mary E. Folsom Blair was just a name on a listing sheet when young writer Phil Primack bought her Epping\, New Hampshire\, property in 1974. As he learned more about this lifelong teacher\, Quaker\, and early advocate for outdoor education\, his reporter bones began to twitch. Over decades\, Primack talked to her former students and relatives\, tracking down Mary’s most accurate life record: letters and journals dating 1897\, when she was fifteen. Her sharp mind and creative soul grapple with the social restraints of her time and “the pain this world holds for a woman.” Mary pens her hopes and bares her despair as young chums die\, her classroom ways are challenged\, relationships with men and women end until—resigned to her fate as “spinster that was\, is and ever shall be”—she meets her Hero on ice. With her collected papers preserved at the Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Study\, Mary Folsom Blair will teach in a digital forever.” \n“Mary’s first journal entries recount carefree youth — long skates along frozen rivers\, outings on her ‘wheel.’ As their author grows\, the writing reflects the struggles of a talented and creative mind frustrated by gender and other restraints of her time\, professional and personal. Mary also writes eloquently of the natural world\, an attachment she was determined to instill into young people. Primack has assured that the forest and streams along which Mary once walked will be forever protected by transferring his land as a life estate gift to the Southeast Land Trust of New Hampshire.” – Phil Primack \nClick Here to Learn More about Mary Folsom Blair and Phil Primack \n“The Writer who Walked These Woods Before Me” By Phil Primack – Boston Globe 12/27/2020  \n  \n \nWe are partnering with our friends at Water Street Bookstore in Exeter\, who will donate 20% of the proceeds from ‘Put It Down On Paper’: The Words and Life of Mary Folsom Blair to SELT: Grab your copy in person in downtown Exeter\, or order through their website (www.waterstreetbooks.com)! \n  \n\nDifficulty: Easy\nYou can read our COVID-19 Safety Policy here: www.seltnh.org/covid19/\nDonate to support SELT’s Outreach Program now: CLICK HERE\nRegistration required – www.tinyurl.com/seltoutreach

SUMMARY:Mindful Movement and Hike with UNH Cooperative Extension
DESCRIPTION:This program is in partnership with UNH Cooperative Extension’s 4H Healthy Living Mental Wellness Pathway. \nThe Mindful Movement and Hike will focus on the growing field of research using nature as more than a backdrop for experiences\, but instead as a powerful modality for mental wellness. Multiple studies referenced in an Advanced Sciences article\, Nature and mental health: An ecosystem service perspective\, have linked time in nature to lower levels of mental distress\, positive social interactions\, and a sense of meaning and purpose in life. Coupled with evidence-based mindfulness practices\, which Dr. Gavin\, Director of Behavioral Medicine for the Back on Trek Program within the Neurological Institute\, writes about in her article\, highlighting an overall reduction in the areas of stress\, chronic pain\, and relapses in mental illness as well improved mental health including quality of sleep. \nCombining these two fields of research\, our skilled presenters will use a guided approach to the day\, using mindfulness-based practices like low-impact hiking and yoga as well as grounding techniques like walking meditation and creating a sound map. The two-hour immersive experience will leave participants grounded in their natural surroundings\, ultimately connecting their Head\, Heart\, and Hands for improved mental Health! \nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Edible & Medicinal Qualities of Fungi with Moose Mountains Regional Greenways
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Moose Mountains Regional Greenways\, join a walk and talk with Rick Van de Poll at Birch Ridge Community Forest in New Durham. \nFungi have been used for tens of thousands of years for food and medicine. Yet every day we learn more and more about their nutritional and medicinal value as more and more people study\, eat\, and run trials on various fungi. With over 4 million species estimated on the planet\, there are as yet undiscovered benefits of using fungi for food or medicine. Beyond the well-known oysters\, boletes\, and chanterelles there are hundreds of good to excellent tasty treats in the mushroom world. Equally and perhaps more important\, beyond penicillin\, shiitake and chaga there are dozens of valuable fungi that provide critical immune support\, cancer-fighting capabilities\, and circulatory relief. Join us for an informative tour of a local conservation area for an in-hand experience with learning about this fascinating group! \nDr. Rick Van de Poll is the principal of Ecosystem Management Consultants (EMC) of Sandwich\, New Hampshire. He has taught Mycology at the undergraduate and graduate level for over 35 years. He has been on the Northeast Mycological Federation (NEMF) Faculty list since 1996 when he co-chaired the joint NAMA-NEMF Foray at Mt. Ascutney. He is currently the Acting President of NEMF and the Sandwich Area Mushroom Club in New Hampshire. \nTickets are $15 per person. \nRegistration required: CLICK HERE.
