SUMMARY:SELTie Book Club - Fall 2025
DESCRIPTION:The SELTie Book Club is back! The book selection this time around will be Is a River Alive? By Robet Macfarlane and the discussion on October 8 will be led by SELTie Roanne Robbins. Our goal is to also have some tie-in Mathey Center programming related to this book in November and December. \nHailed in the New York Times as “a naturalist who can unfurl a sentence with the breathless ease of a master angler\,” Robert Macfarlane brings his glittering style to a profound work of travel writing\, reportage\, and natural history. Is a River Alive? is a joyful\, mind-expanding exploration of an ancient\, urgent idea: that rivers are living beings who should be recognized as such in imagination and law. \nMacfarlane takes readers on three unforgettable journeys teeming with extraordinary people\, stories\, and places: to the miraculous cloud-forests and mountain streams of Ecuador\, to the wounded creeks and lagoons of India\, and to the spectacular wild rivers of Canada—imperiled respectively by mining\, pollution\, and dams. Braiding these journeys is the life story of the fragile chalk stream a mile from Macfarlane’s house\, a stream who flows through his own years and days. \nPowered by dazzling prose and lit throughout by other minds and voices\, Is a River Alive? will open hearts\, challenge perspectives\, and remind us that our fate flows with that of rivers—and always has. \nWe encourage you to get your copy from Water Street Books in Exeter either in person or online waterstreetbooks.com. \n\nRegistration Required: CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:Vermicomposting Tutorial
DESCRIPTION:* THIS IS THE RESCHEDULED DATE (was originally June 18) * \n🤔Does your home compost need an upgrade?🤔Have you been curious about a sustainable use for all those leftover vegetable scraps?🤔Are you a gardener or plant lover looking for a safe and effective alternative to chemical fertilizers? 🤔Have you heard of vermicomposting? 🤔 \nIf these questions have you curious\, then join us for a fun and informative discussion/demo by SELTie Jared Clark on his vermiculture hobby. Jared will talk about the benefits of vermiculture both to your garden and to the earth\, how to get started with your own worm compost and his drawer system that he designed. He will be demonstrating his method of feeding the worms and harvesting castings from the self-contained worm bin as well as his process for making the compost “tea”. 🪱 \nThis presentation will be indoors and outdoors\, depending on the weather. We hope you join us for this fun\, family-friendly event. \n\nRegistration Required: CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:An Introduction to the New Hampshire Veterinary Center for Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:In recent decades\, increased human-wildlife interactions have led to an increased need for wildlife rehabilitation and veterinary care in New Hampshire and beyond. At the same time\, many NH-licensed wildlife rehabilitators have retired\, and on-the-job wildlife training for veterinarians is decreasing as veterinary colleges outsource student wildlife training to private practitioners. Join Dr. Michael Dutton and Helen Dutton to learn about their plans for a new NH Veterinary Center for Wildlife\, which aims to address these needs by providing a centralized site for veterinary care for injured wildlife in New Hampshire; on-site rehabilitation to minimize the stresses of transport; and training programs for wildlife rehabilitators\, veterinarians\, and veterinary students and staff. \n\nRegistration Required: CLICK HERE\nMore information about the New Hampshire Veterinary Center for Wildlife can be found at nhwildlifecare.org

SUMMARY:Helping New Hampshire's Turtles
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about the fascinating and inspiring work of NH Turtle Rescue\, the small nonprofit organization based just down Route 125 from SELT in Nottingham and operated by Dallas Huggins and Drew Stevens\, licensed wildlife rehabilitators in the state of New Hampshire. They work closely with their mentor\, Chris Bogard\, who has been rehabilitating turtles for over 20 years. \nNH Turtle Rescue’s mission is to rescue\, rehabilitate\, release\, and preserve native turtle species through individualized care\, public education\, outreach\, and scientific research in support of imperiled populations of wild New Hampshire turtles. \nIn our early planning\, Drew mentioned the following: “I think our missions dovetail together in a very compelling way: we are the reactive side of turtle conservation in that we deal primarily with the consequences of habitat loss and fragmentation\, and SELT is the proactive side of turtle conservation by providing a means to protect important habitat and its wildlife before those wild animals become imperiled. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure\, but in this case\, there is no true cure\, so protecting habitat is truly the only way to guarantee some type of future for our native turtle species in the long-term.” \nThey will have some turtle ambassadors with them to meet during the talk as well. 🐢🐢🐢 \n\nThis event is open to all ages.\nRegistration required: CLICK HERE\n\nMore about New Hampshire Turtle Rescue can be found at nhturtlerescue.org

SUMMARY:Lichen It or Not: The Wonders of Symbiosis! with Nature Columnist Susan Pike
DESCRIPTION:Join Nature Columnist\, National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions Naturalist\, Dover High School Science Teacher\, and Great Works Regional Land Trust (GWRLT) Board Member Sue Pike for a talk about the biology and basics of identifying common lichens. Lichens are a complex and beautiful life form that grow almost everywhere but are often overlooked and misunderstood. Not a plant and not a fungus\, they are composed of\, at the minimum\, two completely separate organisms-a fungus and an algae. They grow in your backyard\, in the woods\, in the fields. You’ll also find them in some of Earth’s most extreme places: mountaintops\, sea-splashed cliffs\, and gravestones. If you do any hiking in the White Mountains\, you’ll find lichens well above treeline growing on the stunted trees that are continually blasted by winter winds\, frozen into eerie shapes\, coated with rime ice\, subjected to temperatures well below zero degrees. You’ll also find them along the coast\, clinging to salt spray-soaked pine trees\, bearding cedars and other evergreens in bogs and swamps. They have even survived space! How do they do this? What exactly are they? Are they easy to identify? Come find out. \n\nRegistration Required: CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:Sarah Koff Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an informative and enlightening evening with Exeter-based woodcut printmaker Sarah Koff as she discusses the concept of invisibility as related to environmental activism/education\, through the lens of art. \nPeople care more about what they see in front of them. Unfortunately\, most of the problems plaguing the environment (and\, in turn\, our health) today are invisible to the naked eye\, from microscopic nematodes to air particulates. How can we as environmentalists make the invisible visible?  As a printmaker\, Sarah plays with layers of graphics and ink transparency to bring visibility to such destructive elements as pfas\, microplastics\, pesticides\, nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus\, and more. \nSarah is a printmaker\, gardener\, and environmentalist. She creates her woodcuts in the woods of New Hampshire to tell nature’s stories.  Stories from her own backyard\, like the slow creep of the hemlock woolly adelgid\, to such global hotspots as the coral reefs.  But mostly she sticks to her own backyard\, because that is where she first discovered her deep passion for the natural world — that passion that has driven her career and now motivates her to make.  A former environmental educator with a masters’ degree in ecological design\, she has always been intrigued by the connection between humans and the natural world.  As her art practice has grown\, so too has her aspiration to inspire people to become as invested in protecting the natural world as she has.  And from her woodcut studio\, she strives to do just that\, from telling stories with each print\, to pledging a percentage of sales to hard-working conservation organizations\, including SELT. \n\nRegistration Required: CLICK HERE\n\nMore about Sarah and her work can be found at https://sarahkoffstudio.com/

SUMMARY:The Lions of Winter with Author Ty Gagne
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an informative and entertaining evening with author and speaker Ty Gagne as he discusses his new book The Lions of Winter. \nOn January 25\, 1982\, during a four-day search for two missing ice climbers on New Hampshire’s Mount Washington in extreme weather conditions\, Albert Dow\, a member of the all-volunteer Mountain Rescue Service\, became the first—and so far the only— member of a backcountry search and rescue team to be killed in the line of duty in the White Mountains. He was caught in an avalanche in terrain previously thought to present no risk. His teammate\, Michael Hartrich\, was injured in the accident. \nIn The Lions of Winter\, author Ty Gagne describes the ordeal of the missing climbers\, the selflessness and courage of the dedicated rescuers\, the tragic circumstances surrounding the avalanche\, and the heartbreak of the family\, friends\, and teammates of the fallen rescuer. Gagne also chronicles how this grueling event became a landmark of White Mountain history\, ushering in a new era in the search and rescue community of New Hampshire. \n\nRegistration Required: CLICK HERE
